The Erie Lackawanna railroad was formed in 1960 with the merger of the Erie and Delaware Lackawanna and Western railroads. These units represent locomotives ordered by the EL as well as two versions of cabooses that were used.
The EL ordered SD45s when they were first available from EMD to replace first generation power. They also ordered SDP45s from EMD in 1967 without steam generators because of their longer fuel tanks. The SD45s were used in general service while the SDP45s were primarily used on TOFC trains and fast freights. In 1972, when SD45-2s were offered by EMD, the EL ordered these to augment the SDP45s on long distance freights. The EL used bay-window cabooses as their standard caboose.
The 5 pack offered by JR comes with accurate models of SDP45s, SD45s, SD45-2s, and bay-window cabooses in both early and late schemes. The locomotives are very detailed, including the lower height modifications that were required by the EL in order to meet height restrictions on their system. These modifications included lower fans and a special horn bracket to bring the height of the horn down.
The locomotives include custom cabs that are very detailed. The cabooses don’t include interiors, but this isn’t much of a problem. The locomotives include custom sounds that are accurate for the prototypes.
This is a great pack and it bridges a much overlooked gap in content, and these locomotives look great heading up freight trains.
