I love the NS SD80MAC. The detail just blows my mind and the unit is super fun to drive. Another product you can tell JR put a lot of love into.

  2. Peter

It’s great to have all 20 of these engines. 🙂

Sorry about that, I didn’t realize I was viewing this engine. It was supposed to be for the NS Heritage Mega Pack.

I haven’t been able to get this locomotive to work.

Just added this NS SD80MAC because my NS fleet lacked big power. This model has been around for a little while now but still holds up fine given it’s price tag. There are no additional skins or opening doors but there are cab lights, walkway lights, illuminated number boards and it will consume sand and diesel.

Externally the finish is accurate with a slightly faded used look rather than being heavily weathered. Some NS units can be very black and matt so that the body detail is hard to see but this is not the case with this model, the outline of doors, panels and other details are clear and crisp and readily seen. Windows have a sensible degree of reflectivness and look good.

The engine will over heat and come off line if you are working it too hard. I was unsure if I liked this at first but double headed this loco pulled 4000 tons up my long grade which has an average gradient of 1.5 with a few slightly steeper sections and curves. Backing the throttle off to notch 6 prevented the overheating and it pulled away from a stand on this hill. Speed and performance up this hill was in line with what other 10k h.p. engine combos were achieving but you need to anticipate when to back off a touch to keep the big MACs happy.

Engine sounds seem good to me though I’m no expert on that front.

There is also a decent cab with working controls and usable info via the computer screens. Cab compares well to 80MAC photos I’ve seen online.

You may need to find the emd wide cab 3 cab dependency before it will work, it’s on the JR website though so no problem there.

I’m giving 5 stars because it’s worth the price and worked without having to chase dependencies all over the p[lace.
